Shady Harbor has beach rights at the Weekapaug Ocean Beach with it's own private parking lot. There is a life guard at this beach during the season.
The water is beautiful and clear plus the sand is fine and wonderful for family fun. This beach is never overcrowded and a great place to spend your
summer days. It is only a short drive from Shady Harbor or if you have a boat, just a ride to the other side of the pond.
This is a view from the ocean beach looking back at the parking lot with the pond in the background. You can take long walks along the beach all the
way down the shore to the breachway. Along the way there are a couple of areas fenced off to protect the piping plovers who have nested there. There is always
interesting things to discover at the beach, such as beach glass and rocks that have been rounded and smoothed by the sea and sand. Birds abound and it is
easy to find many different species.
Shady Harbor has fantastic views of the shores of Quonochontaug Pond as seen here from the right of ways near the rental house. Down at the end of the street
(about 6 houses down) is a small beach on the pond with a small lighthouse right next to it. Families with young children who do not want to go over to the ocean
beach can take their children there to swim and play in the sand. It is shallow and great for litte children while their parents stay and watch them. There is no
life guard at this beach so it is at your own risk.
If you are out on your boat or even at the Weekapaug end of the pond, you will be able to watch the young members of Weekapaug Yacht Club learn to sail in
the dingeys and compete in races. There are plenty of places to fish all around the pond. On some parts of the shore (not right at Shady Harbor, however)
there are places where you can go clamming.
While driving around the pond and over to the ocean beach, you will discover some absolutely beautiful and spectacular views of the ocean. There is an
overlook in the Weekapaug area where everyone loves to stop and park to watch the ocean waves, boating activities and the wild life. On most clear days Block
Island can be viewed in the distance. All along this waterfront road are many of the typical shingle style beach cottages for which the area has been famous for
many years. These cottages are quite large, though not as large as those in Newport!
